GCX ORGANISES ITS MAIDEN WEBINAR UNDER THE THEME THE ROLE OF GHANA COMMODITY EXCHANGE IN GHANA’S AGRICULTURAL ECOSYSTEM image

Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX) hosted a webinar on 24th March 2021 via Zoom under the theme ‘Why does Ghana need a commodity exchange? The role of Ghana Commodity Exchange in Ghana’s agricultural ecosystem.’ The webinar was organized to sensitise the public on the role of GCX in the agriculture sector and to raise awareness about its services.

The webinar took the form of a panel discussion with five speakers, one moderator and 140 individuals participating. The speakers began by bringing to bear some of the challenges that exist in the agricultural value chain that results in the massive post-harvest losses that occur year on year. Mr. Robert Dowuona Owoo, COO of GCX, took time to educate participants on the role of GCX and the services being offered to help address some of these challenges that were mentioned. Madam Joy Okrah who is the CEO of Awo Fields threw light on some of the benefits she has enjoyed since becoming a member of GCX which includes but not limited to guaranteed market for her harvest, storage, weighing of commodities, price discovery, the possibility of accessing finance and better prices for commodities.

Roderick Ayeh joined the discussion by making known some of the reasons why farmers are unable to easily access loans, and the reasons included the inability to keep accurate data, lack of collateral to back up loans, the uncertainty that farmers can pay back loans due to uncertain market prices. He then buttressed the role financial institutions can play in addressing these challenges in collaboration with GCX through the GCX Warehouse Receipt Financing Model.
