Membership Rules and Obligations Download

GCX is a membership based organizations.

All buyers, sellers and stakeholders are required to subscribe to GCX Membership Program prior to trading or working with the Exchange.

To acquire GCX Membership the following four steps are required:

Step 1:

Applications forms are available from the GCX office or could be downloaded using the link on the GCX website (www.gcx.com.gh/membershipforms).

Step 2:

Complete the membership application form and submit it along with the documents requested on the form that applies to your organization, and submit with an Application Processing Fee of GHC 50.

Step 3:

All applicants who submit their application for GCX membership with the required documents will be notified within 30 days of submission of their application about the outcome. If your application is successful you will be required to pay the GCX Membership fees depending on the type of your Membership. Details about GCX Membership fees can be found on the GCX Membership Application form.

In order to encourage membership, the Exchange has special arrangements for Traders who have difficulties in payment. Details of this arrangement could be obtained from the Exchange.

Step 4:

Membership Requirement:

All successful GCX members will undergo initial training on Exchange products and services, rules and regulations, and trading through the Exchange.

  • 1. An applicant shall submit this application form along with the following documents, (duly attested by the applicant), which are a part of the membership criteria:
    1. Certified copy of Company / Cooperative Registration Certificate;
    2. Certified copy of Companies Regulations;
    3. Board Resolution on appointing authorized signatories;
    4. Education qualification certificates of authorized signatories, certified by a Notary public officer
    5. Proof of experience of the authorized signatories in the form of CVs
    6. Address, and communication details of the authorized signatories (National ID card/ Passport copy, telephone, cell, and email.);
    7. Bank account details and a current Bank Statement displaying the past 6 months;
    8. Copy of tax clearance certificate / VAT registration certificate;
    9. Two latest passport-size colored photographs for the authorized person(s);
    10. Current police report of the authorized signatories;
    11. Latest Auditors Report; and
    12. Any other document, as may be specified by the Exchange.
  • An applicant shall submit a processing fee as specified herein in the application form. In the case that this processing fee is not paid, GCX reserves the right to reject this Membership Application.
  • GCX reserves the right to accept or reject any Membership Application or amend the Terms and Conditions without assigning any reason whatsoever.
  • Membership shall be subject to renewal every two years at the GCX applicable rate.

- Guarantee of Quality & Quantity of Commodities Traded

  • Provide facilities to enhance the quality of your grain (drying, cleaning, and weighing )-coops
  • Grading of grains to inform on quality and make it easy to price by market segments-coops
  • Grains sold on the Exchange are backed by quantity and quality guarantees by world-class collateral manager-seller/banks

- Warehouse Receipting System

  • Crops are converted into tradable held in electronic form and transferred from the owner to several buyers
  • Can use crops as collateral for bank loans

- Electronic Trading Platform

  • Enabling buyers and sellers to trade from anywhere in the world
  • Buyers can negotiate directly with sellers to determine prices acceptable to both using technology from anywhere in the world
  • Real prices for crops are gathered and sent to all market actors
  • Traders are paid within five days of trade through a bank transfer

- Availability of Stock

  • Direct partnership with producers that aggregate their grains and deposit them into exchange-certified warehouses

- Linking Farmers to Markets

  • Exchange continues to expand its network of buyers and sellers in Ghana, the West African region, and across Africa
  • Exchange is working to achieve a ratio of (1) seller to (3) buyers

- Access to Financing with Banking Partners: Farmers and traders

  • Exchange serves as a liaison between banks and farmers and traders to improve financial inclusion for agricultural stakeholders
  • The goal is to assist farmers and traders in obtaining working capital

- Access to Information on Pricing

  • Price tickers in exchange-certified warehouses will display prices on maize and beans
  • Farmers who are informed can negotiate better prices for themselves and avoid selling in distress to middlemen
  • Weekly publications in local newspapers will display results from trading sessions at the Exchange, positioning the Exchange as a price reference center
  • Try to avoid the informal system of price speculation

- Capacity Building for Farmers

  • Through education and training programs farmers will learn modern and proper grain-handling techniques and practices
  • The quality of crops will improve through collateral management services
  • Improved quality standards will reduce the risks for banks, easing the lending process to farmers

- Contract Based Trading

  • Trading through spot contracts ensures contracts are sold for immediate delivery
  • Contract for future delivery to manage price risk

- Others

  • Use of GCX logos and promotional materials to promote your business
  • GCX ID cards and Membership certificates to access GCX and its shareholder's services
General Notice:
  • Prior to trading on the Exchange, all new members must be approved by the Ghana Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Information on the approval process is available with the Exchange’s membership manager.
  • All GCX members will be assigned a GCX Identification Number ( ID number), a GCX ID card, and a GCX Membership Certificate
