Ghana Commodity Exchange as part of awareness creation embarked on a one week community engagement from the 3rd to 6th of October with support from the Ghana CARES ( Covid-19 Alleviation and Revitalization of Entreprises Support) Obaatanpa project in some farming communities in the five (5) Northern regions of Ghana. As was done in Wenchi, Ejura, Kintampo and Kumasi in June this year. The purpose of this engagement was to reach out to some aggregators, smallholder farmers and other stakeholders to sensitize and create awareness of GCX products and services. It also provided us with the opportunity to get first-hand information on the concerns and challenges of these farmers, and how the Exchange can work towards addressing them.

The GCX team visited communities in 16 districts across the five (5) Northern regions namely, Yapala, Yapei, Janga, Sherigu, Balingu, Walewale, Nyong, Chereponi, Wapuli, Yaru, Jirapa, Gudaayili, Busa, Biskani, Nadowli, Nandom, Fielmon, Loagri, Yagbon, Bilinsa, Wabilinsa, Bandei, Vamboi, Wellembele, Funsi, Chinchan and Pulima. The farmers in these communities were sensitized on the products and services GCX has to offer such as the GCX Aggregation Support Scheme (GASS), the Warehouse Receipt Financing (WRF) and also the benefits of trading their commodities through the Exchange.

We had representatives from our financial partner Letshego (LetsGo) and other rural banks who joined the team to engage the farmers in the various communities.

Also the team visited some local radio stations in the various communities for an interview session, to educate members of the community on how the GCX system operates thus, the products and services available, the GCX trading module and the benefits of trading on the GCX platform.

In all, about 1447 farmers were reached. The visit to these communities posed to be very fruitful as many farmers and farmer groups expressed interest in trading through the GCX platform.
