GCX HOLDS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IN FARMING COMMUNITIES AROUND WENCHI, KINTAMPO, EJURA, AND KUMASI WITH SUPPORT FROM GHANA CARES OBAATANPA PROJECT image

A group of people posing for a photoDescxxxription automatically generatedThe Ghana Commodity Exchange remains committed to improving the livelihood of smallholder farmers and easing the burden on farmers, especially during the harvest season. As part of awareness creation GCX embarked on a one-week community engagement outreach from the 6th to 10th of June with support from the Ghana CARES ( Covid-19 Alleviation and Revitalization of Entreprises Support) Obaatanpa project. This engagement aimed to reach out to some aggregators, smallholder farmers and other stakeholders to sensitize and create awareness of GCX products and services. This community engagement outreach was organized to increase the impact of GCX's presence in these communities and for more quantitative results.

The GCX team visited these communities in Wenchi (Boasu, Wurompo, Tromeso and Asubongya), Kintampo (Korbeda, Ajamina Kunu, Asantekwa, Akruma),  Ejura (Nyame Bekyere, Badukrom, Ashakoko and Nokwareasa) and Kumasi (kyeiase, Kwapim, Drobonso, Amoaman, Adidwan). The farmers in these communities were sensitized on the products and services GCX has to offer and the benefits of trading their commodities through the Exchange. Emphasis was laid on GCX financial products such as the GCX Aggregation Support Scheme (GASS) and Warehouse Receipt Financing (WRF). With the Ghana CARES ( Covid-19 Alleviation and Revitalization of Entreprises Support) Obaatanpa project, farmers can now get 50% of the value of their commodities once grade and quantity is confirmed by GCX staff on the field and 100% upfront upon arrival at a GCX Certified warehouse.

We had representatives from our financial partner Letshego (letsGo) Ghana who joined the team to engage the farmers in the various communities. The team also addressed some concerns of some members who have traded through the Exchange and needed clarification on the trading system.

As part of the community engagement activities, the team visited some local radio stations in the various communities for an interview session, to educate members of the community on how the GCX system operates thus, the products and services available, the GCX trading module and the benefits of trading on the GCX platform.

In all, about 769 farmers were reached. The visit to these communities posed to be very fruitful as many farmers and farmer groups expressed interest in trading through the GCX platform.
